Abstract

This paper describes a piece of research conducted among teachers and headteachers who were trying to introduce education for sustainable development (ESD) into their schools. The study shows how teaching ESD demands innovation in both content and process. In the face of dilemmas and contradictions - teachers can self-create possibilities to resolve these (a process akin to 'autopoiesis' or 'self-creation'). Such emergent properties provide examples of ESD in action. Insights from complexity theory suggest that we change systems simply by being a part of them (we are never apart from them).
