Abstract
Matthew Murray's Saddleworth Moor series appears in a 6 page editorial spread in FD Magazine Holland - De donkere wolken boven Saddleworth Moor. Matthew Murray fotografeerde Saddleworth Moor, een natuurgebied bij Manchester. Het landschap herbergt een lugubere geschiedenis. Nothing as sensitive to human projections as landscapes. They do not talk back, do not correct the image you have of them and they have no opinion about themselves. They do not even have an inherent meaning, only those that people give to it and that only acts as a mirror of those people themselves. A landscape can be beautiful, idyllic even, or fairytale. Pure, unaffected, unspoiled or raw. We can get inspired, we can feel one with the landscape, or even with everything, feel null and void, or empty our heads. How would you describe the landscape photographs that Matthew Murray made of the Saddleworth Heath near Manchester in the last five years? The landscapes are universal, not explicitly English. Murray was inspired by 17th-century Dutch painter Jacob van Ruisdael and that shows: the magic light, the turbulent skies, something wild in the landscapes. Untreated? Yes, there is no human being to be seen. Innocent? No. Certainly three of the five victims of the 'Moors murders' were buried here. Between 1963 and 1965, Myra Hindley and Ian Brady murdered five children between the ages of ten and seventeen. Four of them were also abused and tortured. Of the fifth, Keith Bennett, that has not been proven because he was never found. Ian Brady died this year, Myra Hindley in 2002. His last wish was that his ashes would be scattered over that beautiful Saddleworth heath. The judge forbade it. The ash was thrown into the sea in a weighted urn last month.
