So readable and accessible is 'Occupation' that it was only three-quarters of the way through that I put it down for long enough to realise just what had been nagging away at me from the start. Put simply, it's the fact that Angela France eschews the close focus on the autobiographical that characterises most emerging poets' first couple of pamphlets or books . Instead, she takes on a variety of characters, many of them dispossessed or disenfranchised or at the very least sidelined, and gives them a voice in poems of quiet strangeness. - Matt Merritt
