This study was carried out in an independent preparatory school in England, where the researcher was a senior member of staff In the first part of this study a new form of ipsative referenced assessment is derived. It uses verbal reasoning scores as a way to measure academic potential, fully acknowledging their limitations and constraints. The method derived, however, provides a measure of the extent to which an individual's academic achievements is in line with individual academic potential. This measure, called an a:p ratio, allows for the identification of underachievement within any ability band. The second part of this study applies this measure to a small number of pupils in order to identify those who are underachieving. Four of the pupils so identified are provided with additional help and support, during which time a range of qualitative data is collected and their progress is documented through case studies. A theoretical model is developed from the key themes that emerge from the case study data. This new model demonstrates the inter-relationship between a wide range of factors that appear to impact upon academic achievement and success. Analysis of the data also leads to a number of recommendations for schools, recommendations which can assist schools in their endeavours to ensure that all pupils are working to their full potential. As a piece of research this work has attributes of a piece of action research, with the associated advantages and disadvantages. It also draws upon both quantitative and qualitative research paradigms and their associated methodologies. Its conclusions, whilst tentative, have the potential to inform and improve educational practice through the identification and remediation of academic underachievement.
