Abstract

In England the concept of citizenship education is often discussed in terms of the primary and secondary National Curriculum and is not considered as relevant to Higher Education (HE) (QCA, 1998; Englund, 2002). This research considers academic staff and undergraduate students' conceptions of citizenship education in two disciplines, and investigates how citizenship education is implemented and experienced at the University of Gloucestershire. A constructivist methodological approach has been taken which combines the method of focus groups with a newly adapted form of Nominal Group Technique. Three key themes of citizenship education were identified in all of the focus groups conducted. The identified themes, which were all considered important within the context of society, are roles, rights, and responsibilities; community; and education. This research discovered that citizenship education was implicitly present in the experiences of teaching and learning, but rarely incorporated explicitly at undergraduate level. The research concludes that citizenship education has a largely social focus. Academic staff and undergraduate students recognise that it is important for students to develop key skills such as communication, critical thinking, and problem solving, in order for them to understand the global society in which they live and work. This research suggests that citizenship education has a social inference and develops with the evolution of society. Ultimately, it has identified that citizenship education is implicitly present in the teaching and learning practices of academic staff and undergraduate students in Education and Psychology at the University of Gloucestershire.
