Abstract

Billingham's artist book 'Ray's a Laugh' was exhibited in 'Artists Book Editions, Publications by Yvon Lambert and Hans Werner Holzwarth', Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin, (8 June – 21 July 2018). This exhibition examined artist's books. An artist book can be a work of art in its own right, a multiple produced in a limited edition, an artist’s take on their work, adding a narrative to individual images, or a reinterpretation of the book as a medium. This exhibition presented artist books and editions in homage to the gallerist Yvon Lambert and his own imprint of artist books started in the 1960s. It also explored the collaboration with publisher and book designer Hans Werner Holzwarth who was credited with designing 'Rays a Laugh'. Other artist book publications exhibited included Jim Goldberg's 'Raised by Wolves', Scalo Publishers, Zurich, 1998; Boris Mikhailov's, Unfinished Dissertation, Scalo Publishers, Zurich, 1998; Robert Frank's 'Moving Out', Scalo Publishers, Zurich, 1995; Boris Mikhailov's, 'Case History', Scalo Publishers, Zurich, 1999; Richard Prince's, 'Adult, Comedy, Action, Drama', Scalo Publishers, Zurich, 1995 and Larry Clark's 'Perfect Childhood', Scalo Publishers, Zurich, 1995;
