Abstract

Bookcycle is part of a series of illustrated books, ‘newspapers’ and comics. The series describe observed, overheard and fictionalised narratives about cycling, Christmas, politeness, wrestling and grow to include an ever wider diversity and multiple variety of everyday subjects. The theme is ‘Subjective truth’ and the products are an attempt to communicate (with drawing ) a version (or multiple versions) of this ‘truth’. The truth is tirelessly investigated, without text, using narrative drawing. (Fiction and lies are also investigated). In the exploration of visual language for these publications, character, humour, context, and sequence are used as primary illustration strategies. The Two Brothers is the memory of a described event illustrated. The Illustrator incorporated his own memories to visualise the story. Shallow Drifts, Dipples and Deep Scowles is a Christmas story and an experiment in creating a sense of the truth without using it. A series of stories linked by Christmas, illustrate the year in its essence – without close reference to the facts. Exciting Cycling 2 & 3 are part of a comic series about the experience of cycling. The invisible response to cycling revealed and invoked by extraordinary stories. The project has a vigorous emotional truth. Bookcycle is a Cycling Adventure . The Cannop Valley and its landscape is explored via significant narratives, truth, true lies and fictional. You cannot speak to Mr Smith: he is Dead is a series of telling incidents from the lives of a middle-aged couple. Their activity, at loose in the world, is illustrated as an insight into their particular world of meaning. Revealing the world, looking below the surface are visual strategies. The New Everything is an immersive, wordless, illustrated ‘News Paper’. It attempts to illustrate everything (the news) from a year in a subjective world. Abstract reflections and observations, a life world in small black and white drawings.
