Abstract
‘Entangling’ is a visual contemplation on human existence in relation to the shifting flux of our environment. It observes our fluid relationship with nature in the Anthropocene, presenting a momentary view into the palimpsest of our experiences and actions. Hounsome’s work is based on field trips alongside recording the everyday. She collects memories of places through the experience of being on location. Entangling also draws on personal childhood narratives and experiences. Hounsome uses the book structure to compile drawings and writing into an anthology that sits between picture book, graphic novel and illustrated words. The potential of black and white rendering is interrogated through detailed drawings and observations using marks to represent solidity and temporality. Complexity emerges from simplicity. Entangling considers the micro and macro narratives associated with environmental damage. The structure of the book is framed by universal measurements of time. The familiarity of these measurements allows us to approach more complex tales, which are layered and revealed beneath these markers. Spring, summer, autumn and winter are partnered with representational elements – Air, Water, Fire and Earth. The textures of the season attempt to evoke emotional connections to the narrative. Each element has a sub narrative, a tale which considers how small actions can have impact on our natural world. The graphic novel is a space where image and text are in their closest partnership and read simultaneously. The panelling and articulation of images allows representation of time passing that is most similar to an animation or film storyboard. It allows the image to meander, the eye to wander and the narrative to travel between different zones, time and spaces. Time is one of the most important aspects of Entangling and Hounsome uses graphic novel principles to forge connections between our everyday stories and the larger narratives of climate change.
