Abstract

Four of Matthew Murray’s photographs shortlisted for the final of the 2016 International Photography Awards (IPA). The competition’s theme is the family of man and it focuses on the shared and universal strands of human life. Matthew’s images received honourable mentions in the categories of old age, childhood and marriage. The inspiration for the competition dates back to 1939 when photographer Edward Steichen was given the task of curating a show for the Museum of Modern Art, in New York City. He asked 30 photographers from all over the world, including Henri Cartier Bresson, Eugene Smith, and Dorothea Lange, to document the essence of humanity. Steichen asked the photographers to photograph the commonalities of human life: birth, childhood, love, marriage, and death.The IPA Family of Man competition is divided into similar categories and invites photographers to explore the same universal themes in different places and environments.
