Abstract
A short chapter reviewing the research on the links between urban and rural areas and their importance in the development of poorer countries around the world. This chapter contains a boxed case study exploring the significance of urban and rural ideologies in China's development. It identifies the importance of healthy mutually beneficial links between the cities and the countryside for the development of the countries as a whole.
