Abstract

Over the Covid inflected summer of 2021, in small offices and cafes, over Zoom and other online teams’ platforms, in Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria, in Italy, Spain, Norway and the UK, short stories inspired by popular music were being recorded as part of a European project on listening and migration. Mapping the Music of Migration (MaMuMi) was a 2-year Erasmus+ funded research project running from November 2019 to October 2021 that centred on migrants across Europe telling stories about songs. It aimed to engineer ‘enunciative spaces’ for listening, and the resulting songs are accessible on an app within the MaMuMi website. Gender was not the driver for the project, nor was it obviously manifest in the three core themes that emerged, on memory, family and belonging (Gardner and Hansen 2022). However, gender is evident in the ‘gendered points’ in these song stories, that is, moments of articulation flowing between singer and listener/storyteller. Using the work of sound studies scholars (LaBelle 2018, Voegelin 2019, Western 2020), writers on popular music, gender and survival (Hill 2016, Werner 2023) alongside Kathleen Stewart’s (2007) ideas around forces, flashes and intensities, I suggest that gender is present in a small selection of song stories voiced by women who had migrated into and across Europe
