Abstract

Faintheart is the world’s first user-generated feature film and winner of the Film4/MySpace MyMovieMashUp Award. Vito Rocco was selected from over 800 applicants to write and direct this multi award winning, internationally marketed practice-led research project, which centres on the relationship of fictitious narrative to audience generated and related content. The project seeks to address the creative relationship between audience and filmmaker, fictitious and real life characters and reflects on the successes and failures of working within this mode. By framing the film within a narrative context (Viking battle re-enactor fights to win back family) the film seeks to challenge classic narrative structures within the tradition of the romantic comedy and experiences within film viewing habits by creating a space for the appraisal and presentation of how an audience engages with complex and contradictory actual situations. This project examines whether it is possible to document, either through fiction or factual storytelling, something whose truth is many sided or ultimately inscrutable. FAINTHEART received an international cinema release (UK, USA, Australia, Hungary, Scandinavia); was nominated for the Standard Life Audience Award at the Edinburgh Film Festival, where it was also the Closing Night Gala Film and was nominated for the audience award at the Gothenburg International Film Festival and screened at the 13th Annual EU Film Festival in Chicago. The film is released on DVD by Contender Entertainment Group; the soundtrack is also available online. Faintheart is a unique project in terms of enabling its audience to engage with every aspect of the film’s production, from genesis of script to multi-platform distribution via simultaneous theatrical and DVD release, on-line web streaming and airline and international cable TV VOD.
