Abstract

Half is a one-act play written by Andrejevic-Bullock to address issues of immigration in modern-day UK. It was funded by Arts Council England through their National Lottery Project Grants and private funding from two local benefactors. The funding enabled Andrejevic-Bullock to engage the services of experienced theatre professionals including Director Jacquie Crago who has worked with the RSC, National Theatre, Bristol Old Vic and other leading theatres and drama schools. The group engaged to bring this text to life was the Rebel Girls Theatre Company, an all-female ensemble of varying ages (from early 20s to early 70s) and nationalities (American, Serbian, British and New Zealander), deliberately chosen to address ageism, gender imbalance and other issues of representation currently prevalent in the British theatre industry. As part of the overall project, Andrejevic-Bullock was a guest on BBC Radio Gloucestershire to discuss the play and issues of assimilation of immigrants into their new local communities. The play premiered at the 7th annual Stroud Theatre Festival where it had a total of 4 performances from 13th-15th Sept 2019 and was the second most visited play of the festival in terms of the ticket sales. A performance was professionally filmed by SOS Photography.

Additional Information: Jelena is young, foreign and alone in England. Back home, her mother and half-brother, the only family she has left, are on a war path. On the day of her father’s funeral, a question is asked – a question which reveals where loyalties lie and from which direction the danger is coming. As a ghostly winter’s night settles on the family home, old wounds are re-opened and secrets are discovered. And who was it that left the white flowers on the door step? As odds are stacked against Jelena in England, will she succeed in building a better life here and will she manage to make her family whole again?
