Abstract
Assessing education for sustainable development (ESD) is fraught with difficulties given the aspects of values and intentionality that are critical in this field yet so difficult to assess accurately in traditional surveys. This paper draws on the work of Bakhtin and subsequently Wegerif. It suggests that all dialogue is addressed to an unseen super addressee or Infinite Other and this offers a deeper (or vertical) dimension to dialogue. This dimension can be detected through statements that demonstrate critical thinking and may lead to a consideration of underpinning ethical dimensions and values in any given situation. Such dialogue could be seen as an indicator of a potential, if not an actual, shift in values. Initial results of this action research project are discussed and next steps outlined.
