Abstract

The call for decolonising criminology has been particularly urgent due to the discipline’s history, which is traced back to the period of the colonial expansion of European and Western imperialism. With this context, the normative subject matter of ‘crime’ became inextricably linked to systemic racialised Othering and oppression. Much of the discourse in criminology has been about control and punishment, often directed at dominated and minoritised populations. Discussions about decolonising the criminology curriculum have increasingly gained traction to critically interrogate contemporary and modern explanations of crime. This chapter explores a project that the authors undertook at a UK university to embed a processual approach to decolonising a criminology theory module that engaged both staff and students. This chapter provides some reflections on the authors’ experiences in engaging in this work, recognising both the rewards and the challenges.
