In recent years strategic management has become a basic concept and a mainstream part of management education, but its application needs to be explored. This article questions whether there is a strategic management framework (model) that could be of universal use in countries with markedly different economic systems, political views and cultural identities. A number of four-star hotels were selected in two countries for this research, China and the UK, for the reason of being good examples of having two widely different economic and political environments. A framework for strategic management contains four key areas: scanning, planning, analysis, and evaluation.
