Abstract

Southern adopts a critique of our contemporary experience as mediated through digital images, as a means to explore the tenor of our social, cultural and political lives within the post-truth context. As the failings of neoliberalism and globalisation are increasingly revealed, Southern probes vital questions about the relationship between the financialised digital architectures we traverse, the precarity of our western democratic systems, and the ascendency of populist narrators emboldened by the collective coherence of the far right. In calling for a re-evaluation of our relationship to the digital ecosystem, Southern outlines strategies led by the aesthetic sensibilities and pragmatism of artists and activists, in creating unique forms of digital resistance, and facilitating new ways of developing both on and offline communities. Southern concludes by asking whether, out of the ashes of late capitalism, we could see the beginnings of assurgent thinking led by priorities of digital equality. This would seek to reinstate the authorities of veracity, sincerity and authenticity, coupled with values of social and cultural consciousness and justice.
