Abstract

The Khartoum course on 'The Management of Human Settlements in Hot Dry Climates' brought together Sudanese public officials working in a wide range of ministerial posts in different regions of the country. Organised by the University of Khartoum with the support of UNESCO, UNCHS and ALEC SO, the course took the form of a seminar/workshop in which participants were given the opportunity to present their own case study experiences and learn from each other in intensive group discussion sessions. The seminar /workshop was structured around three major aspects of human settlement management - physical / environmental,socio/economic and financial / administrative - in the particular context of hot dry climates, and with special reference to the Sudan. The outcome has been a set of recommendations for action which highlight the need for transectoral co-ordination and integrated action in the effective management of human settlement problems, many of which require urgent attention and appropriate treatment.
