Abstract
This is a case study of the residential development process in Spain, and concerns Can Serra, a 30-hectare site, situated about half a mile north of Hospitalet town centre in the Barcelona periphery. Since 1960, Can Serra has been transformed from virgin agricultural land into a densely-populated residential dormitory suburb of Barcelona, now housing over 17,000 people in 4,000 dwellings, most of them in tower blocks six to fourteen storeys high. The article examines the history and evolution of this development process through the 1960s and 70s and identifies key issues which may be of interest or relevance to those working within similar administrative or developmental frameworks in Spain and other countries.
