Abstract

In this paper I examine British state identity within media reporting on the 2011 Libyan civil war. This paper is based upon a wider project that focuses upon a range of emerging themes in greater detail; this paper focuses upon the theme of “weapons”, and the various subject positions present within reporting on this subject. I find that the British state is represented firstly as militarily strong and secondly as able to learn from past mistakes (in this case the decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003 with inadequate intelligence). In contrast, Gaddafi is constructed as a highly irrational man, who may use any weapons at his disposal, and the Libyan state is seen to act outside of international norms. Interestingly, some news reporting portrays Libya as too under-developed to produce weapons of any serious kind. Thus, whilst Libya was seen as likely to have weapons that may pose something as a threat to Britain, the construction of British state identity as militarily strong but able to learn from past mistakes made it harder to countenance full military intervention.
