Photographic work from Billingham's series 'Ray's a Laugh' was exhibited in 'Family Matters: The Family in British Art', Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, (15 October 2011 – 8 January 2012) touring to The Millennium Gallery, Sheffield (2 February – 29 April 2012); The Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, (19 May - 2 September 2012) and Tate Britain, London, (15 October 2012 - 24 February 2013) The exhibition explored the changing functions of the family and identified particular concerns that have threaded through artistic depictions of family over from 450 years ago to the present. It offered perspectives through five thematic sections – 'inheritance', 'childhood', 'parenting', 'couple and kinship', and 'home'. The exhibition was part of the Heritage Lottery Fund project 'The Great British Art Debate' that ran from 2008 - 2012. The Great British Art Debate was a nationwide series of events and exhibitions, and an online space, that enabled exploration and debates around Britishness and art. The Great British Art Debate reached more than 1,650,000 people across four partner venues out of which 132,207 were young people and 295 works of art toured between partners. Other artists in 'Family Matters: The Family in British Art' included Thomas Gainsborough, Johann Zoffany, Rachel Whiteread, Thomas Struth, Zineb Sedira, David Hockney, Anthony van Dyck, Bill Brant, Michael Andrews, John Singer Sargent, Gillian Wearing, William Hogarth, Tracey Emin and others.
