Abstract

Billingham's photobook 'Ray's a Laugh', Scalo, 1996 was documented by Gerry Badger in 'The Photobook: A History, Volume 2', Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, Phaidon, 2006, on pages 289 and 304 - 305. 'The Photobook: A History' is a 3 volume work co-edited by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger that is widely considered to be the authoritative work on the history and significance of the photobook. It provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the photobook, from its inception in the 1840s through to the present day. The documentation of 'Rays a Laugh' was in the chapter 'Home and Away, Modern Life and the Photobook' which also documented Stephen Shore's 'American Surfaces', 2005; Kohei Yoshiyuki's 'Document Kouen'; Chris Killip's 'In Flagrate'; Paul Graham's 'Beyond Caring'; Jim Goldberg's 'Raised by Wolves'; Boris Mikhailov's 'Case History'; Bruce Gilden's 'Go' and Miyako Ishiuchi's 'Mother's' Volume two was reprinted in 2008 and 2011.
