Abstract
Photographic urban landscape and family work from Billingham's series 'Black Country' and 'Rays a Laugh' respectively was exhibited in 'Wounds: Between Democracy and Redemption in Contemporary Art', Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden (14 February – 19 April 1998). This exhibition focused on art made at either personal or social points of friction, fragmentation or pain and which cuts through the smooth but also comforting surface of conventional culture. Participating artists included Franz West, Racheal Whiteread, Carl Andre, Andy Warhol, Thomas Shutte, Thomas Ruff, Gerhard Richter, Mike OParr, Bruce Nauman, Edvard Munch, Mario Merz, Steve McQueen, Jannis Kounellis, Anich Kapoor, Rebecca Horn, Eva Hess, Damien Hirst, Mona Hatoum, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Richard Hamilton, Rodney Graham, Douglas Gordon, Felix Gonzales Torres, Theodore Gericault, Marlene Dumas, Stan Douglas, Willie Doherty, Reneka Dijkstra, Larry Clark, Louis Bourgeois, Christian Boltanski, Bernd and Hilla Becher, George Baselitz, Vanessa Beecroft, Joseph Beuysm Marina Abramovic, Francis Bacon, Mathew Barney, Diane Arbus and others There was a related film and video programme. Guided tours and panel discussions were also scheduled. There was an illustrated two-volume catalogue with specially commissioned essays by ten leading critics published to accompany the exhibition.
