Abstract

Photographic work from Billingham's series 'Landscapes 2001 - 2003) was exhibited in 'A Picture of Britain', Tate Britain, London in Collaboration with the BBC, (15 June – 4 September 2005) This exhibition explores subjects such as travel, nationhood and romantic yearning by exploring historical and contemporary artistic response to the landscape. It was a unique collaboration with the BBC which broadcasted a complementary six part BBC One programme presented by David Dimbleby. Both the TV programmes and the exhibition took six journeys around the UK, covering the North, South, East and West of Britain, the Heart of England and the Highlands and Glens. By exploring the artistic response to the landscape. The exhibition, book and TV series included major artists from Thomas Gainsborough, JMW Turner and John Constable to Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.
