Abstract

Billingham was invited to be part of the selection panel for the first Spectrum Award in 2018 alongside Mark Wallinger, Charming Baker, Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Sacha Craddock and Mary Simpson. The Spectrum Art Award focuses on the creative excellence of artists on the autistic spectrum. It provides a vital bridge between the art world and artists with autism. The award is open to all UK adults on the autistic spectrum (aged 18 and above) and for work in any medium. The Spectrum Art Award 2018 culminated in a critically acclaimed exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, London and generated coverage on T.V, in the national press and specialist art journals reaching a global audience in excess of 374 million. Severn finalists were selected for a cash award and the opportunity to have their work publicly exhibited and advanced in its most suitable form. The five selected artists also received valuable professional mentoring, curatorial and PR support. The Spectrum Art Award was established to create a platform and a professional network for autistic artists to enable them to access opportunities that might otherwise be closed or difficult to access. The Award recognises that living with autism creates challenges but also a unique perspective on the world and provides a public platform for creative individuals on the spectrum to articulate and define their life experiences as well as opportunity for them to reach their full potential.
