Abstract

Zoo was a large body of video and photographic work made 2004 - 2007 in zoos around the world including Buenos Aires, Berlin, London, New York, Vienna, Antwerp to name a few. The work began as an artists residency programme at VIVID, Birmingham Work was exhibited in solo shows in Zoo, Compton Verney, Warwickshire (2006); La Fabrica, Madrid (2007); Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Wolverhampton (2006); Anthony Reynolds Gallery, London (2006) and Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea (2007). Zoo also comprised a large component of Billingham's survey show at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne in 2007. Zoo examined both representations of captive animals in zoos and the stereotypic behaviour found in many species of captive animals. There was an illustrated hardback book of the work published called 'Zoo' by VIVID in 2007 with commissioned essays by established writers.

Additional Information: Photographic work from Billingham's series 'Landscapes 2001 - 2003, 'Black Country' and 'Zoo' were published in 'Photo Art: The New World of Photography' Uta Grosenick and Thomas Seelig, Thames and Hudson, 2008, (pages 54 - 57) ISBN 978-0500287118. The book was an accessible survey of nearly 120 international artists at the forefront of photography including Elina Brotherus, Tacita Dean, Luc Delahaye, Alec Soth, Jens Ullrich and Michael Wesely.
