Abstract

Capturing Middle England was a round table discussion that took place at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham on Friday 27th January The discussion took its starting point from the two photographic exhibitions exhibited at the Ikon at the time by artists John Myers and Stuart Whipps. It centred on the various ways photographers have made work in response to the Midlands region from the 1970s to today. Jonathan Watkins, Ikon Director, chaired the discussion with Whipps and Myers, Richard Billingham and Eugénie Shinkle, Senior Lecturer in Photographic Theory and Criticism at the University of Westminster. Billingham was invited on account of the artists extensive photography of the region from 1990 onwards
