Abstract
Landscape architecture is a profession with a history of over 5000 years. As society has changed, its activities have extended from garden design to public parks to urban design to involvement with landscape urbanism. This article reviews the history of garden design in Eurasia and its extension into the urban design in both Europe and China. It then considers how China can establish a diverse and innovative profession supported by education in landscape and urbanism. The article concludes with thoughts and recommendations for educational curriculum and the landscape architecture profession in China.
