Abstract

Typically the differences between type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 (T2DM) diabetes are characterised by the absolute deficiency of insulin in the former and the relative deficiency of insulin associated with insulin resistance in the latter. Blood glucose concentrations above the normal limits lead to numerous biochemical changes, including excessive glycosylation of proteins, which collectively lead to long‐term complications of diabetes. In addition to the direct biochemical effects of hyperglycaemia, other associated conditions, such as hypertension, contribute to the risks of microvascular disease, of which the most common is diabetic retinopathy (DR). DR progresses from mild non‐proliferative DR to proliferative DR and is considered to develop as a consequence of long duration of diabetes, poor glycaemic control, high blood pressure and several genetic factors. It is integrally linked to glycaemic control, blood pressure control, lipid levels, smoking and non‐modifiable risk factors such as age and duration of diabetes.
