Abstract

Electronic waste (e-waste) presents escalating environmental, health, and governance challenges, particularly in developing economies. Drawing on interdisciplinary literature, this study examines the effectiveness of e-waste awareness initiatives in relation to consumer purchasing behaviour and regulatory contexts, with a specific focus on Nigeria. Evidence indicates that information-based campaigns are insufficient in the absence of supportive regulatory frameworks, economic incentives, and institutional capacity. The analysis highlights the role of extended producer responsibility, economic instruments, and community-based engagement in strengthening public participation, while also acknowledging the dominance of informal recycling networks. The study contributes context-sensitive insights to inform more coordinated, inclusive, and sustainable e-waste management strategies in Nigeria and comparable settings.
