Abstract
Context and rationale The World Netball Coaching Advisory Panel identified a need to support the global movement of their coaches, given the recent growth in participation levels and professionalisation of Netball (World Netball, 2021). Judging the equivalence of qualifications globally is a challenge (Lefebvre et al., 2016). This research explored the current netball coach education and development systems within six nations, as representatives of each region of the World Netball landscape, to propose a mechanism to facilitate the judgement of equivalence of qualifications and thus enhance their portability. Methods Qualitative analysis was conducted on National Governing Body documentation (N=77), interviews of system managers (N=11) and coaches (N=17) to identify potential benchmarking tools to judge equivalence of qualifications. The International Sports Coaching Framework (2013) and Côté and Gilbert’s (2009) identification of professional, inter and intrapersonal knowledge were used to classify content and competences; and Grecic and Collins’s (2013) epistemological chain model to reflect on coaching philosophy and behaviours encouraged within the coaching workforce. Findings Variability was found across nations in structure, content, assessments and underpinning philosophies and behaviours. The degree of similarities and differences across national systems, at different levels of coaching, were identified in knowledge, skill competences and underpinning philosophies and behaviours. A mapping tool was proposed to enhance the portability of qualifications and questions posed to World Netball for future considerations. Recommendations Recommendations were made for developing a matrix of qualifications that are deemed equivalent, utilising World Netball’s recently released endorsement process (2023) to support quality assurance. Suggestions were also made for increasing information flow and consideration given to the portability of coaching expertise not just qualifications.
