Abstract

This article reflects on the spoken-word performance given amongst the Stacks in the storeroom of the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, as part of Conversations in the Sedgwick (T2M Conference: Mobilites, Aesthetics and Ethics, Konkuk University, Seoul,2023, in the Lancaster University live-stream strand, Rocky Futures). Moving between registers of academic enquiry, speculative response, attention to language and to matter, it considers rocky mobilities and their conceptual terrains. A stack is a geologic tower, isolated through erosion. The Harker Stacks are tall columns of drawers containing rock samples ordered in the sequence of their acquisition. Each displaced rock enters a newly sedimented anthropogenic geology, a novel assemblage of rocks and records, proximities and distances: a spatial, temporal and generative (re)ordering. As repositories of storied matter, I suggest the Stacks might also offer insights into future mobilities and our relation to strata.
