Abstract

Twilight World: Susie Olczak Single Channel Moving Image 2023 This work collages together footage from field research which focuses on the elements around the world. This is combined with footage from materials in Susie Olczak’s studio of lighting, perforations, and neon to capture the disorientating nature of environments that shape our experience of the world; the urban, the rural and the digital. This new video comments on the hypnotic nature of being in a world which is caught within the desire to progress. It conveys experiences of being in the jungle of Panama on the border of Colombia where the surroundings were often intoxicatingly dreamlike and overpowering. It becomes so easy to lose your way, to get lost within the density. The title pays homage to documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog who is a strong influence on Olczak’s work. Twilight World is Herzog’s first novel.
