Abstract

Co-curated by Bick, Parsons and Pratt, this exhibition and catalogue revisits research first conducted for 'The Order of Things' (The Wilson, Cheltenham and The Everyday Press, 2017). Setting out to analyse the concept of 'Systems' principally through the work of Jeffrey Steele (1931 -2021) in relation to the contemporary notion of disruption it takes three key artworks as points around which to curate the work of a group of contemporary artists. The key works were Steele's 'Domenico' a screenprint billboard commissioned by Welsh Arts Council in 1967, Parson's 'Achrome'(1993)a full-scale black, grey and white version of the Union Jack, and Arnaud Desjardin/Fraser Muggeridge Studio's 'Brexit' bus, a life size (14 Metre) version of the Brexit bus reproduced on 420 sheets of A3 paper. Around the critical positions each of these works took, artists Andrew Bick, Katrina Blannin, Tanya Goel, Clare Goodwin, Jonathan Parsons, Katie Pratt, Giulia Ricci and Ana Teles offered different forms of analysis through practice and critical reinterpretation.
