This paper discusses hand-drawing by architects in postwar Melbourne, using, as case studies, drawings made by Robin Boyd (1919-1971), and drawings made for the practice of Edmond & Corrigan (Maggie Edmond, b. 1946; Peter Corrigan, b. 1941). Boyd and Edmond & Corrigan are leading figures in Melburnian architecture, representing the Modern and Postmodern periods, respectively. Nevertheless, they differ significantly: where Boyd argued, as a Modernist, against what he saw as ugliness in the suburbs, Edmond & Corrigan argues for a Regionalism based on the suburban vernacular. Their audiences differ as well, as Boyd established a strong and lasting impression in the Australian public consciousness, but Edmond & Corrigan maintains an intensely provocative dynamic with the architectural profession. These qualities may be observed through some of their drawings, which, in having a critical and often sardonic approach, are, effectively, polemical drawings. This presentation uses contextual and interpretative analyses of a selection of Boyd’s and Edmond & Corrigan’s drawings, with reference to their particular use of the human figure and Marco Frascari’s theory of cosmopoiesis. These analyses show how the polemical drawing in postwar Melbourne twice helped change our attitudes to the suburbs.
