Abstract

This is a studio research in sculpture, which investigates the representation of the human body as three-dimensional space, through the interaction of light with the surface of opaque materials. The research is divided into three stages. The first commenced with a photographic study of the male body in the standing position, in which the anatomical details were examined through patterns of light/ dark contrast, and codified in terms of convexity and concavity. The first stage of the research provided the basis for a series of studio studies in the second stage, which attempted to transpose this information into three dimensions. To assist this transposition, the research became increasingly focused on an understanding of the conditions necessary for depth-reversal illusions to occur. This involved the combination of lighting and sculptural techniques, such as modelling and casting, which led to the creation of predominantly concave sculpture, known as 'counter-form sculpture: The third stage concentrated on the realisation of the counter-form sculpture in relation to the observer, and their perception of depth-reversal illusions. The combination of specific lighting conditions, prescribed viewing points, and a subtlety in the meticulous modelling of the surface of the counter-form sculpture, finally formed an integrated system of sculpture, which revealed the representation of the human body as three-dimensional space.
