Abstract

This research thesis aims to examine one section of Scripture, Isaiah 1-12, with a view to exploring the text and its presentation of the character of God with the hope that future research on Isaiah will find sensitivity to such a presentation helpful in analysing and understanding the text itself. Having introduced the subject against the background of other scholars who have already offered statements on the character of God, the first chapter explores the definition, means and goal of characterisation in general, before giving some attention to what the exegete should be alert for when analysing the characterisation of God in literary works within the prophetic genre. The next eight chapters explore the portrayal of God in Isaiah 1-12, section by section (1: 1-31; 2: 1-4:6; 5: 1-30; 6:1-13; 7: 1-9.:6; 9:7-10:4; 10:5-11: 16; 12: 1-6). The final chapter draws together the several aspects of God's character which are most prominent in Isaiah 1-12, reflecting on the level of coherence, tension or paradox inherent in this presentation of God, interacting with two scholars who have laboured prominently in this area: Walter Brueggemann and Andrew Davies.
