The presence of social support networks, such as family and friends, has been shown to be beneficial for the well being of an individual. The homeless are more likely to have encountered problems, which affect their ability to give and receive social support. Their networks have been found to be less effective than the networks of those who are housed. The current study used, quantitative and qualitative data to analyse the extent to which the homeless felt supported by their support networks, their satisfaction, and the level they engaged with the network members. Changes in twenty pa_rticipants' social functioning and quality of life over their first three months of being housed were measured comparing participants who received high support with those who received low support. With the group as a whole neither the participants' quality of life nor social functioning improved, further there was some evidence of social functioning deteriorating over the study duration. Those with high support were found to function better with regard to social competence and perceived more support from their network with self-esteem than those with low support. Participants with a better quality of life were satisfied, felt supported and engaged more with their support networks, indicating that support networks are important for the homeless in supported housing. However supported housing was not found to be a catalyst for any significant changes in the quality of life or social functioning of the homeless and it has therefore not helped them reintegrate into society.
