Abstract

The book Allotment Gardens: Losing Ground? consists of an introduction and seventeen chapters written by nineteen authors. Czech urban gardens are presented from the perspective of food production in their social and non-monetary context and in their relation to urban planning. Chapters in the book analyse contemporary problems and future challenges as well as assessment methods of allotment gardens. The book includes several case studies from Czechia as well as two chapters presenting an overview of legal approaches to urban gardening in other European countries. Other important topics covered in the book deal with the environmental aspects of allotment gardens and their role in climate change adaptation. The book is intended for urban gardeners, municipal officials and councillors, urban planners, journalists and for any citizens who are interested in urban gardening. The text points to the fact that gardening brings many public benefits and that it is an important element of balanced urban development. It argues that gardening in urban areas deserves more appreciation in Czech society.
