The aim of the study was to explore, examine and enquire into service users' (SUs) understandings, experiences and opinions of wellbeing and its promotion within mental health services. Additionally, the aim was to explore and examine mental health professionals' (MHPs) and senior management (SM) opinions and perspectives of SUs' wellbeing and the role of mental health services in the promotion of wellbeing. The study was granted approval by the Local NHS Research Ethics Committee. Using a qualitative (case study) methodology, participants were purposively sampled and interviewed. Participants included 5 adult (1 male, 4 female) SUs of Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Trust, 3 MHPs and 1 senior manager. SUs were interviewed using a focus group and MHPs and the senior manager, using semi-structured interviews. The focus group and semi-structured interview data was transcribed verbatim and stored on the qualitative software programme NVivo 7. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyse the data. Analyses revealed four main themes from the focus group with SUs: holistic wellbeing and normality, .positive experiences of wellbeing promotion, negative experiences of well being promotion, and place and promotion of wellbeing. Nine main themes emerged from the semi-structured interviews with MHPs and SM: holistic wellbeing and normality, physical wellbeing, services provided, positive changes in wellbeing, positive determinants of increased wellbeing, negative determinants of reduced wellbeing, position of wellbeing, role of mental health services, and issues and improvements. In conclusion, there is evidence of wellbeing promotion and provision of services that promote wellbeing for SUs within the Trust. However, there are concerns regarding service provision due to the reforms, reorganisation and financial cuts that have taken place due to national mental health service changes. A contradiction of viewpoints exists between MHPs and SM in relation to the adoption of the recovery model versus the medical model. Implications for practice as a consequence of these findings include a need for the development of a local wellbeing strategy in the Trust.
