Current figures of energy expenditure in drumming have been drawn from limited data using orchestral percussion (Tigerstedt and Olin, 1924; Loewy and Schroetter 1926). The only contemporary study to quantify the energy cost of rock/pop drumming was a case study(Srnith et al., 2008) which suggested a higher intensity and rate of energy expenditure. The aim of the present study was to quantify the energy cost of rock/pop drumming and to assess the physiological demands. Participants were 14 male professional or semi professional drummers who completed a laboratory based incremental drumming test (OT) to establish the relationship between energy expenditure (indirect calorimetry) and heart rate (HR) and performed a ramped cycle ergometer test to exhaustion to establish maximal oxygen uptake ( V O2max) and maximum HR (HRpeak), During a concert performance HR was measured and the average performance HR was used to estimate energy expenditure. Peak HR for DT (DTHRpeak), concert performance (CP) (CPHRpeak) and HRpeak were analysed using Pearson correlations and ANOV A. During CP estimated energy expenditure (mean ±SO) was at a rate of 613.5±159.5 kcal'h-1 during performances of 38.6±15.6 minutes duration. Energy expenditure converted to metabolic equivalent (MET) was 8.1 ± 2.2. During DT participants attained 78.7±8.3% of V O2max, and CPHRpeak, OTHRpeak and HRpeak were 186±16, 178±17 and 189±11 b·min-1 respectively. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between DTHRpeak and HRpeak• No other significant differences or correlations were reported between CPHRpeak, DTHRpeak, HRpeak• The rate of energy expenditure of rock/pop drumming is higher than previously reported and requires high HR and V 02. Further studies should investigate the potential of rock/pop drumming as an alternative form of physical activity.
