Abstract
An hour long special episode in the long running series for BBC. It was broadcast on 16 February 2017 to an audience of over 6.8 million. Rocco worked on the episode as director leading every element in the realisation of the script. This episode focuses on issues affecting the main characters within the series, including health (Type II diabetes); relationships and mortality. Issues within this episode are commented on by end users and fed back into the script process by producers and script editors. The generation of new content is directly informed by the continuing commentary within social media interfaces linked to the series. The episodes connect with and continue Rocco's on-going research into the impact of user-generated content as an initiator and source of cross-platform content. This work follows on from Rocco's investigation within Faintheart (the world's first user-generated feature film) into the creative relationship between end user and filmmaker, fictitious and real-life characters and reflects on the successes and failures of working within this mode. This project examines whether it is possible to document, either through fiction or factual storytelling, something whose truth is many sided or ultimately inscrutable.
