Abstract
Ian Marchant performs an energetic multiple plate spinning in this piece about mania and compulsion. An extract from the piece was shown as part of the paper 'Deadpan and Trauma' (Tony Clancy) at the Stillness and Motion symposium at the Watershed (April 2016). Influenced by the work of Buster Keaton and Eugene Ionesco, the film uses multiple locations and shifts the viewer's identification with the eye of the camera in an increasingly frantic series of set pieces and repetitions. The viewer is drawn into the hyperactive, ever anxious view of the plate spinner; contrasted against this are serene images of plates, spinning precariously but apparently independent of human intervention.
