Abstract
This monograph explores the role of the case study in research, teaching and practice, with particular reference to the planning profession. After reviewing a number of different definitions and perspectives regarding case studies, the authors give a number of detailed examples from different disciplines to illustrate the benefits of the case study. The focus is then switched to the case study research programme being undertaken at Trent, which is providing materials for training and practice, as well as research of the planning process itself. The paper thus illustrates the multi-faceted benefits of the case study approach to research, learning and practice.
