This paper introduces a special issue of Children, Youth and Environments that presents a selection of international research papers and field reports. The contributions exemplify a range of current approaches to Place-Based Education (PBE) and learning that educators, researchers and communities are exploring. Two areas of interest run through the issue: first, researching PBE and second, evaluating the impact of PBE on participants, communities and places. The authors explore emergent conceptions (including theoretical) and the praxis of PBE; they also discuss and critique associated pedagogies and research methodologies.
