Abstract

Studies on organisational culture in the context of Industry 4.0 (I4) in the automotive industry are mostly limited to samples from management, and an isolated view of organisational culture and technological development still dominates the literature. An isolated approach poses the risk that divergences and complexities in the concept of organisational culture in manufacturing Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) during the adoption of I4 remain unrecognised. Another argument in the literature is the ambiguity and diversity ascribed to organisational culture, which presents challenges in its practical applications. Implementing a concept of organisational culture in manufacturing SMEs during the adoption of I4 in the automotive industry remains a prevalent and unresolved problem. These two issues are addressed in this research. This research employed a mixed-method research design that combined sample survey of 84 participants and semi-structured interviews with 15 respondents to obtain a comprehensive data set and perspective of industry experts to analyse the organisational culture in manufacturing SMEs for effective diffusion of management and technology innovations for successful adoption of I4 in the automotive industry. Finally, recommendations of eleven key factors of organisational culture have been developed for effectively diffuse management and technology innovations for successful adoption of I4. This research makes a contribution to knowledge by providing a comprehensive framework of eleven key factors of organisational culture combined with four cultural dimensions: Power-, Role-,Achievement- and Support- oriented. This PRAS framework facilitates a methodological examination of organisational culture from a holistic perspective across different stages of I4 adoption. The PRAS framework presents a pragmatic approach for practitioners and researchers addressing the prevailing challenges faced by manufacturing SMEs during adoption of I4.
