Abstract
Distortions in the perception of time (chronoception) have been associated with various forms of digital media and platforms. Virtual Reality (VR) has been associated with chronoception-distortion, specifically the phenomenon of ‘time compression’ in which an individual perceives the duration of a given interval as being shorter than its timed duration. The present study examined VR chronoception-distortion and included a number of novel approaches. An opportunity sample of 65 participants, including undergraduate students and members of the public, participated in an independent measures design. There were two factors: platform type (VR and conventional monitor) and time perception mode (prospective and retrospective perception). Results showed that estimates made prospectively were significantly more accurate than those made retrospectively. There was no significant difference found between platform type, and there was no significant factor interaction. The findings are commensurate with previous studies of VR chronoception-distortion, which have prioritised the head-mounted display (HMD) VR technology and found time distortion effects with no difference in platform type. A tentative conclusion is that the aspect of VR responsible for the time distortion effects is more likely to be the immersive content and/or control mechanisms of the VR experience than the HMD technology.
