Abstract
The Gospel of John presents a structure for dialogue by taking ‘Word’ as an emblem, or sign, of both prophecy and scripture, corresponding to similar structures in the Qur’an. Exploring the nature of sign in each text, the article considers the extent to which the first audience interacts with the signs that the messenger of each scripture brings and how much this aids the first audience to recognise the messenger. First, it considers the development of sign (ayā) in the Qur’an as the words and deeds of the messenger of the Qur`an along with the first audience’s response to these signs. The article then considers the signs (semeia) in the Gospel of John in relation to the first audience’s response to Jesus’ words and deeds. The conclusion remarks on how sign is a marker of both divine message (scripture) and messengership (prophecy). These further particularise aspects of each text for Christian-Muslim encounter. They also invite engagement with the scriptures of each audience in the here and now to reflect on the signs for belief.
