Abstract

This presentation explores the evolving role of evidence-based practice (EBP) within the field of restorative justice. Framing EBP as both a ‘what works’ methodology and a safeguard against harm, the session considers the growing demands for accountability and rigour in RJ delivery, particularly in light of recent work by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Restorative Justice. The presentation proposes a model for EBP tailored to the restorative field, integrating academic research, lived experience, sector knowledge, and participant perspectives. It considers how these forms of evidence can be balanced and mobilised to inform training, service standards, evaluation, and strategic growth. Ultimately, the session advocates for an inclusive, multidimensional evidence base to strengthen restorative practice and ensure it remains principled, responsive, and sustainable.
