Abstract

Consistent calls for physical education to modernise and move with the times have been echoed from scholars within the field as well as teachers at the frontline in schools. Making physical education more meaningful has been seen as a key avenue that could help the subject have a greater impact on young people. Combining a focus on meaningful physical education (including key features and pedagogies) with a high growth lifestyle sport (parkour) could offer both a winning combination of contemporary pedagogy and an activity that aligns with youth culture. Within this hybrid theory and practical session we outline how we can bring to life the meaningful physical education approach and develop content knowledge within parkour to provide a winning combination of the WHAT and the HOW. Headline findings from a doctorate action research study that has implemented this in schools are also shared.
